Best YouTube Thumbnail Size in 2026 (Exact Dimensions Guide)

Uploading a thumbnail at the wrong size is the silent CTR killer. Here are the exact numbers that matter in 2026 — and why the pixel dimensions are only half the story.

The official YouTube thumbnail size

YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio) for thumbnails. The minimum width is 640 pixels, and the file must stay under 2 MB. Accepted formats are JPG, PNG, GIF (static) and WebP.

Why 1280×720 and not smaller?

Thumbnails appear at many sizes: huge on TV apps, medium on desktop, tiny on phones. YouTube stores one image and scales it everywhere. A 1280-wide master stays sharp on 4K TVs, while a 640-wide upload looks soft the moment it scales up.

Design rules the dimensions imply

  • Design for 168px. Most impressions happen on phones and the sidebar, where your art is a fraction of the canvas. If your text is unreadable at 10% zoom, it doesn't exist.
  • Keep a safe zone. YouTube paints a duration badge over the bottom-right corner — roughly the right 25% and bottom 25% of the frame.
  • One focal point. At small sizes, two subjects compete; one face or object wins.

Test before you upload

Dimensions are easy; context is hard. A "correct" 1280×720 thumbnail can still fail if it only looks good full-screen. Use a previewer like VidVisual to drop your design into a realistic feed and check it at desktop, mobile and sidebar widths — plus dark mode — before you publish. It's free and runs entirely in your browser.

Quick checklist

  • 1280 × 720 px, under 2 MB, JPG/PNG/WebP
  • Readable at sidebar size
  • Nothing important in the bottom-right corner
  • Tested in both light and dark themes
