The YouTube Duration Badge: Designing Around the Safe Zone

There's an invisible layer on every YouTube thumbnail: the duration badge. It sits in the bottom-right corner and covers more of your design than most creators realize.

How much space does the badge take?

The badge scales with thumbnail size, but a safe rule is to treat the bottom-right ~25% width and ~20% height of your 1280×720 canvas as off-limits for anything important. On mobile, proportionally, that's a significant chunk of your artwork.

What gets covered most often

• Watermarks and channel names tucked into the corner
• The end of a text line ("...in 2026")
• Secondary subjects standing to the right

Safe-zone design strategies

• Left-weight your composition. Faces and text left, negative space right.
• Let the badge sit on simple background. Sky, wall, gradient — the badge blends in.
• Use the overlap deliberately. Some designers put a dark strip there on purpose so the badge looks native.
